Xiangjun is a mission found in Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom.

Briefing Edit

Emperor Shi-Huangdi has sent you on an important mission to spread Chinese culture and influence in the southern lands of Annam. Advance scouts report the land is fertile and ideal for rice cultivation, and that wild pigs and dangerous tigers inhabit the thick forests. Lacquer trees grow sturdy and strong in the region, and their valuable resin will make a profitable export. You might even be able to strike a good deal on raw, uncut jade from the natives, who call themselves Viet. The jade from this region is a rich green, and once fashioned into intricate carvings it will surely bring a healthy price on the streets of Xianyang. If matters are progressing well after a year, the emperor has vowed to dispatch a generous shipment of weapons. While the natives do not seem overly aggressive, like wild animals they should not be trusted.

As royal administrator and envoy for the Qin Empire, you need to build a strong, vibrant city that clearly shows the locals the superiority of the Chinese way. The site of this ancient fishing village should be a nice place to start.

Goals Edit

  • Population of 1800
  • 1000 people in Ornate Apartment or better
  • Produce 16 casks of lacquer in one year
  • Produce 12 jade carvings in one year

Summary Edit

Despite the goals of this mission, it is actually very easy to reach them, although making money is the tough aspect for the first few years since you need to send diplomatic requests to find cities purchasing Lacquerware. The mission is also complicated by the limited space and the excessive amount of trees that need to be cleared to reach any of the rocks needed for certain buildings to achieve good Feng Shui, as well as the ruins that also should be cleared to reach the coastline.

The population and housing goals can be reached by a single Common Housing block filled with as many houses as possible, excluding space reserved for required services. The high population goal, however, has the unfortunate side effect of making it difficult to keep people employed, resulting in rampant umemployment problems. Many cities purchase Lacquerware, and a few purchase Ceramics and Lacquer, so overproducing on all of these goods can net a profit in the long run.

Shortly after starting the mission, the Kingdom of Nanyue will be discovered. They will eventually "greet the world", allowing you to send a diplomatic request to find out what they need. However, this new kingdom will demand you to send silk: this commodity cannot be grown, so ignoring the demand is recommended. If you have the funds, you can import the silk from a trade partner, but you can divert ill feelings that Nanyue will have by sending them gifts of Ceramics, a good they also need. It is important to keep either Nanyue or Wu happy, because these cities are needed to procure Jade, which you need to produce Carved Jade that is required to meet the Jade Carvings goal.

Apart from this early request, you shouldn't see much military action here so there isn't much need to import Iron from a trade partner. Don't bother with Elite Housing since there is no need to create a large city here and there is also no need to build a large military presence. There is a gift of Weapons after the first year, which should be used to build a military. Of course, if Nanyue doesn't get angry, then it's likely that the fort will have no use to you.

Reaching the population, housing and lacquer goals should be easy enough. If you are struggling to import enough Jade, call Xi Wang Mu and ask her to bless Jade Carver's Studios. Remember that a studio holds a maximum of four Jade, so you need a minimum of three Studio's to reach the goal needed to complete the mission.
