Gemstone Mine is a building type in Pharaoh.

General InformationEdit

As the name suggests, the Gemstone Mine is used to mine the rock for Gemstones. These stones can be exported or used to fashion jewelry at Jewelers. Unlike gold and copper mines, they are built at rocky outcroppings rather than metallic deposits. Assuming they're fully staffed, gemstone mines produce 64% of 100 units of gems per month, or 768 units per year on average; with Ptah's temple complex and altar, this is increased to 94.1% a month, or 1129 per year. This in turn is enough to supply 1.36 (fully staffed) jewelers. Gemstone and jewelry production can save a city a significant amount of money, as imported luxury goods are very expensive. However, gemstone mines are very expensive to build.

While they are raw materials, gemstones are fairly lucrative export options in their own right. By default, they sell for 92 debens per 100 units. This number is slightly misleading as they require fewer workers to turn out the final product than a good that had to be gathered and processed first; therefore, a gemstone export industry requires fewer workers than many goods made from scratch, and by extension requires fewer workers and wages.
