The Clay Pit is a building type in Pharaoh.

General Information Edit

Clay pits produce clay, which is used to make Pottery and Bricks. They must be built close to a water source, as indicated by the presence of grassy tiles. However, not all grass can support clay pits, which invariably need to be placed very close to a body of water. Not all cities can build clay pits, regardless of whether water is present or not.

Assuming that it is fully staffed, a clay pit reaches 64% completion of the production of 100 units of clay per month, or 4% per game tick (each month has 16 ticks). A fully staffed clay pit produces 768 units of clay a year by default, or 1,129 units of clay per year with Ptah's temple complex and altar. This speed is increased by 50% if Ptah's Temple Complex and its altar are constructed. Understaffed clay pits produce clay at a much slower rate.

Clay pits' production rates mean that each clay pit can support 1.36 potters (or almost two with Ptah's temple complex and altar); the same is true for brickworks, assuming they always have enough straw.

Clay is a poor export option, fetching only 25 debens per 100 units. Cities that can produce clay and are looking to make money would be much better served using the clay they gather to make bricks or pottery for export. Both fetch much higher prices (especially bricks).

Clay pits are prone to fires. As with most industrial buildings, they are undesirable to live next to.

Clay pits are subject to be a glitch: they can be placed at the edge of a map, even in the absence of water.
